History of Taj Mahal
The history of Taj Mahal is devoted to love of Shah Jahan (son of Jahangir). There is a strong belief that The Taj Mahal Agra was built by Shah Jahan as a sign of love for his second wife Mumtaz (Arjumand Bano Begum). Shah Jahan wanted to build a memorable building that no one would have seen ever and this resulted in The Taj Mahal. So, this wonderful structure is blessed with love and memories.
Shah Jahan fell in love with Mumtaz (Arjumand Bano Begum) at the age of 14. And got married to her in 1612. Although Mumtaz was not the first wife of Shah Jahan. But in 1631, Mumtaz died while giving birth to their 14th child (Gauhara Begum). Then Shah Jahan decided to build such a building in the remembrance of his love. So, he commissioned 32 million rupees in the year 1631 and the construction work started on 1632. The main parts of Taj Mahel had been built till 1643 but it took 10 more years to properly finish the construction work. The construction of Taj Mahel was completed in the year 1653.
Then Aurangzeb (the son of Shah Jahan) imprisoned Shah Jahan in the Agra Fort. Shah Jahan could only see the Taj Mahal from a window of the room in which he was arrested.
Since then there have been a few attacks on Taj Mahal which harmed it’s beauty. But in the 19th century, Lord Curzon (British Viceroy) got the Taj Mahal repaired and there were also some small changes that he added such as the gardens were again made in the British style.
